YoungDale Stables:

About Us:

Welcome to the YoungDale website! We hope you find our site useful in providing you with enough information to let you choose the perfect place for you to enjoy horses.

This site is under construction, so please bear with us.

We are a small, growing stable whose goal is to promote Western riding and instruction in horsemanship through meticulous instruction on quality horses. We offer Western and English riding lessons, and Day Camp for the children and adults. Our main focus is for clients to advance their horsemanship skills and enjoy themselves in our warm, friendly atmosphere. Our 125 acres of trails offers hours of trail riding opportunities, and we hope to have an arena and training track completed in the next year or two.

For competitors and non-competitors alike, YoungDale Stables is the ideal place to have the most fun possible on horseback! You can bring your own horse, or use one of ours! Our horses are a band highly athletic former competitors and schoolmasters. From Tequila, the little Paso Fino mare who will go down any trail, to Cool, the former Standardbred race horse; to Carla, the Thoroughbred cross who has taught hundreds of children the joys of riding.

We take great pride in our horses, and are proud of their training and gentle attitudes. Horses must have a special disposition and willingness to cooperate when dealing with beginner and experienced riders alike; and because our horses are treated well and allowed to be themselves, they relish the time to interact with people.

Another feature we offer is special needs boarding for stallions or horses in need of supportive medical care; as well as boarding for race horses - whether racing, resting, recovering or retired. All of this specialty boarding is overseen by our resident Vet Tech and Stable Manager : Christina L. Young.

Got a horse that needs some work? Whether you need a horse trained from scratch, need a horse re-trained, or your horse just needs a tune-up now and then, we'll train them for what you need. Having trouble with your horse? Maybe we can help. "Hard-to-work-with-horses" are our specialty.

Trainers and Coaches:

As stated earlier, we offer riding lessons according to Equine Canada standards, taught by Equine Canada interns attaining their coaching certification; as well as E.C. certified coaches. The majority of our staff is also bilingual, and certified in first aid.

Christina Young, our head trainer, has been riding and working with horses for over 23 years; and has been training horses for almost half that long. She began riding at 3 years of age with her best friend, Allison Zlepnig - successful  international Show Jumping competitor. Since the age of 10, she worked at many stables - English and Western, competitive and none - in the Ottawa and surrounding area; mucking stalls and exercising horses. At such a young age, money meant, nothing to her. She was just glad to be able to ride such a variety of different horses. She would ride anyone's horse! This could have gotten her into a lot of trouble, as some of these horses were not being ridden for different reasons - such as nasty habits like bolting, bucking, rearing and all manner of things. This worked in her favour, however, because it taught her how to stick like glue and get past obstacles to attain a specific goal. And so, as she got older, Chris' work shifted more to managing stables and training young horses. This is what she does today.

Chris has also spent many years working with racing Standardbreds, either as a paddock groom, or helping rehabilitate them and retrain them after their careers at the track have ended. She is also currently in the process of becoming certified by Equine Canada. Her riding interests and endeavors  include Dressage, Three Day Eventing,  Reining, Competitive Trail, Western Games, and Endurance Racing.

Christina's main areas of expertise are nutrition, health care, and training and conditioning young or remedial horses. She provides expert training in ground work; focusing on manners and "handiness"; and starts horses under saddle with a strong foundation for all riding disciplines. Her background in Veterinary Technology gives her the perfect tools to provide horses with everything they need to live as naturally, and as healthy as possible.

Our head instructor, Laurie Young has worked at many stables in the Ottawa area, mucking stalls; exercising; and training young horses. She is an Equine Canada Western Rider Level IV; NCCP and Learn to Teach theory coach; and has over 10 years experience teaching children. She is also certified in CPR and First Aid.

Laurie is currently attending Kemptville College - a division of the University of Guelph - attaining her certification in Equine Studies, as well as her coaching levels. Laurie's main areas of riding expertise are Western Games, and Reining. She competes successfully on her 24 yr. old Quarter Horse Li'l Red (you may have seen them cleaning up in all the barrel classes), and  more recently, on her new reining prospect, 6yr. old QH, George.

Rejane Sylvester, our English Riding instructor, has many years of experience with horses, and has studied horses and horsemanship - including riding and training - at places such as  The Saskatchewan Institute of Technology (Certification in Equine Studies), and Kanadiana Equestrian Centre in Saskatchewan. She is an English Level 3 rider, and a Western level 4 rider. Rej will be attaining her Western Coaching Level 2 in 2007.

She recently spent the past 7 months training young horses for Lucky Acres Quarter Horses, T and S Training Centre in Alberta, under World Champion, Susan Horrocks. Her other duties while working there included assisting in breeding, conditioning, and showing horses on the farm; as well as some managerial work.

Rej also has her NCCP A and B, learn to teach, is certified in first aid, and is fully bilingual.

During the summers she spends in town, Rej also competes successfully at local fairs on our amazing QH Leo. The amazing part about him is that he consistently places top 3 in his classes, but he's completely blind! Leo has so much confidence in Rej, and is so well adjusted and well trained that he is actually safer to ride than most horses who can see! At least you know he won't spook at brightly coloured obstacles (which is probably why he does so well in trail classes...).

This is Rej on our QH (her "boyfriend") Leo. They love what they do!

All of our coaches and trainers have trained under Liz Adamson - one of Canada's top Reiners..
